Day 1 (Part 3)

Well...I finally convinced engineer Ben to give me back the computer so that I could post a blog update from the XMU Acoustic Lounge at SXSW 2007! It's truly been an unbelievably awesome day of acoustic music here in Austin...and this is only the first day of recording from the lounge! Little did I know...but Jim Fairchild aka All Smiles (formerly of Grandaddy) is old friends with Great Northern...so, after he finished his acoustic set he stayed and sat in on the Great Northern set...if you listen closely to the performance that will air tomorrow on XMU...you'll hear Jim's stellar shaker skills! It's pretty sweet. I have to say that I'm really impressed with each band's "creative" use of instruments when it comes to performing their acoustic sets...see the picture below of Softlightes and their make shift drum set up which consisted of an empty drum case and brushes. Lemurs also had a pretty sassy scenario happening as well...the drummer rigged up an empty suitcase and foot pedal to provide what I'm told is a "little more kick than snare, but not much"...according to engineer Aaron. All I know is that it looked cool and sounded even better. But don't take my word for it...listen tomorrow and Saturday starting at 9 am west / noon east for all the exclusive LiVE music from SXSW 2007...I promise your ears will smile :) Okay then...that's all for now...enjoy more photos below...chat with you soon! xoxo...t.

Day 1 (Part 2)

Hello Hello!

I'm back with Part 2 of Day 1 from the XMU Acoustic Lounge. All I can say is WOW! This has been such an unbelievably awesome day of LiVE music thus far. The sweet boys from Bon Savants visited the lounge and after their stellar set we thought the only thing that could top the music would be to create a kick ass pyramid...I mean...come on now...it IS March madness after all ;) Personally, I think we're ready for some Big Ten action. HA! The best part about this day so far has been the bonding between the bands...even though most of them are meeting for the first time...they're sharing instruments...turning each other on to new music...it's awesome. Loney, Dear made fans out of everyone in the room especially Brad from Army Of Me...who left the lounge with not one but two records from Loney, Dear himself. Then the sweet David Terry (aka Aqueduct) came to the lounge with a brand spanken new keyboard scenario...which he then loaned to the boys from Softlightes...because that's just the swell kind of guy he is. The keys and makeshift drums (ie, empty guitar case played with brushes) made for an amazing set from Softlightes. So...thanks David for being such a sharer. It's been a whirlwind of music today and there's still much more to come...I'm stoked to hear The Isles in an acoustic setting...I saw their plugged in set last night and they ruled...they're stopping by the lounge later...it's going to be sweet. Before I sign off for this blog...I want to send out a special thanks to "Intern Kory" for lugging 20 bottles of cold water to the lounge for the artists...you're the best Kory ;) Okay then...I guess that's all for now...I'm being told by engineer Ben that I'm rambling...and I'm like...duh...that's what I do best! But I'm sure he's right...so, bye bye for now. Check out the pictures below...and enjoy. This is Ben writing now...I just took the computer away from Tobi...I'll give it back to her later, promise!

Day 1 (Part 1)

It's official people! The XMU Acoustic Lounge is up and running...and I have to say that the recordings are amazing thus far! Given that I'm a radio talker and not technical at all (seriously...I can barely figure out how to set my Tivo) I'm so very thankful to have the awesome broadcast team of Aaron, Ben, Danny and David "twidling the knobs" as I think they say in the recording biz...they rule and the bands are having a blast. If you don't believe me...wait until you hear the acoustic sets. Make sure you tune in tomorrow at 9 am west / noon east for the music and mayhem of Day 1 in the lounge. Below are a few pictures of the bands that have visited us so far...please take a gander...and enjoy! xoxo...tobi :)
